A 2,500-Year-Old Discovery in Uşak: A 250-Metre Wall Fully Uncovered
At the ancient city of Blaundos in Ulubey, the 2,500-year-old, 250-metre sacred enclosure wall surrounding the North Temple has been fully uncovered.
A new discovery has been made at the ancient city of Blaundos in the Ulubey district of Uşak. In excavations led by the Uşak Museum Directorate, the 2,500-year-old, 250-metre sacred enclosure (temenos) wall surrounding the North Temple has been fully uncovered.
Excavation director İlhan Çavuş said the wall is far older than the roughly 1,900-year-old North Temple. Water channels carrying water to the temple were also revealed inside the temenos wall; coins from the Roman period found in the temple area are thought to be linked to visitors' wishes and votive offerings.
Blaundos, where soldiers from Macedonia settled during Alexander the Great's Anatolian campaign, is known for its garrison-city past and its natural fortress look formed by the Ulubey Canyon on three sides. According to the Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, the site welcomes around 350,000 visitors a year.
This historical and natural richness of our region is also a potential for village tourism. Those interested can see our Nature Tourism service page. (Source: AA)
